THE FLAVOR OF SPAIN™
This Week’s Spanish Composer: EDUARD TOLDRÀ
by Elena Greco
July 21, 2015 Eduard Toldrà Soler (1895-1962), born in Villanova y la Geltrú (near Barcelona), was a Spanish Catalan composer, violinist and conductor. He founded the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and greatly furthered the cause of Catalan culture. His composition students included Xavier Montsalvatge. He wrote symphonic music, chamber music, opera and art songs. He particularly loved Catalan poetry. A very lyrical composer, his art songs, which most of which are in Catalan, have an elegant, simple melodic line which very beautifully expresses their lyrics, and harmony which evokes the emotion of the lyrics. They reflect the influence of the French Impressionists, as well as a more nationalistic Spanish element. They are delicate in character, rich in accompaniment and quite singable.
