THE FLAVOR OF SPAIN™
This Week’s Spanish Composer: RAFAEL TABOADA Y MANTILLA (1837-1914)
by Elena Greco
August 25, 2015
Born in Cadiz, Rafael Taboada was a very popular composer in the salons of Madrid. He studied music with pianist/composer José Miré, and was a composer and a voice teacher at the Escuela Nacional de Música. He published numerous collections of salon songs typical of that time, many of which show Italian and operatic influence, as well as a few zarzuelas.
Two of Taboada’s songs are available in Suzanne Draayer’s “Canciones de España: Songs of Nineteenth-Century Spain” collections; all three volumes are valuable to the music library of a singer of Spanish art song, and contain IPA, style analysis and composer information. You can also find a few of Taboada’s songs at http://datos.bne.es.
